Wadeye – Generation Rise

Overview

In Wadeye, more than 20 young people (ages 13–19) participated in a three-day wellbeing, leadership, and music program delivered by Generation Rise in partnership with Waditj Warriors and led by nationally recognised artist J-MILLA.

The program was designed to create a safe and inspiring space where youth could explore identity, build confidence, and strengthen community ties through music, storytelling, and culturally grounded yarning circles. A unique focus was placed on health and wellbeing, with the inclusion of on-site health check-ups, health education sessions, and incentives for participation.

For a community often affected by social unrest, this program marked a turning point: it was one of the first large youth gatherings in months with zero riots or major incidents—a powerful testament to the role of positive engagement.

J-MILLA has already proven his ability to create a safe, engaging, and inspiring space for young people in Wadeye. By tying music and culture to health and wellbeing, this program gave our youth the confidence to look after themselves and each other. We strongly urge support to bring him back to our community, where he can continue making a meaningful and long-term impact.

Health & Wellbeing Focus

On-site health check-ups

were encouraged and normalised by making them an integrated part of the program. Over 15 young people completed full check-ups, with many returning to the clinic afterwards for follow-up care.

Incentives for participation

including free merchandise, signed items, and personal engagement with J-MILLA—helped break down barriers, making health engagement feel rewarding rather than intimidating.

Education and conversations

Youth were encouraged to speak openly about mental health, when to ask for help, and the importance of taking care of their bodies. These yarning circles normalised conversations that are often stigmatised in remote communities.

Role-modelling healthy behaviours

By seeing a respected artist take health seriously and encourage regular check-ups, young people connected the idea of wellbeing with leadership and pride.
